If you’re expecting a baby, you probably have a million things on your list right now. Somewhere between appointments, getting the nursery ready, and trying to figure out what you actually need for a newborn, you may be wondering when you’re supposed to book newborn photos.
One of the questions I get asked a lot is, “When should I book my newborn photographer?”
The short answer? Before your baby is born.
But if your baby is already here, don’t panic. That doesn’t necessarily mean you missed your chance.
When is the best time to book newborn photos?
I recommend booking your newborn session sometime during your second or third trimester.
You obviously don’t know exactly when your baby is going to arrive, so when you book with me, we use your due date as a placeholder. Once your baby is here, you’ll reach out and we’ll schedule the actual session date.
Booking ahead just means you know you have a spot on my calendar before things get a little crazy once baby arrives.
And trust me—those first few weeks can be a blur.
When do newborn sessions actually take place?
For the style of newborn photography I do, I typically recommend having your session when baby is around 14–20 days old.
At this age, babies are still sleepy and usually curl into those sweet newborn poses really well, but I also don't believe that every baby has to be photographed before some magical two-week deadline.
Babies come early. Babies spend time in the NICU. Moms need extra time to recover. Life happens.
If your baby is already a few weeks old and you haven't booked newborn photos yet, still reach out. I photograph older newborns too, and we can talk about what will work best for your baby.
What if my baby comes early or late?
This is exactly why I don't schedule your newborn session for a specific date months in advance.
Your due date simply holds your place on my calendar.
Once baby arrives, we'll choose the actual session date based on when they were born, how everyone is doing, and my availability.
So there is no need to worry about trying to predict when your baby will make their appearance!
What happens after I book?
I try to make the whole process as easy as possible—because the last thing you need with a brand-new baby is another thing to stress about.
My newborn studio is located in Ridley Park, PA, making it convenient for families throughout Delaware County and the surrounding Philadelphia area.
My studio is stocked with wraps, outfits, props, and everything we need for your baby's session. You don't have to go out and buy a bunch of things or show up with bags full of props.
Once baby arrives, I'll also send you a questionnaire so we can plan the session around your preferences.
You basically just have to bring me the baby. 🤍
Is it ever too early to book?
Not really!
If newborn photos are important to you, I'd rather you reach out early than wait until after your baby arrives and hope I have an opening.
I only take a certain number of newborn sessions so that I have flexibility for babies arriving earlier or later than expected.
Booking during pregnancy gives you one less thing to think about once you're home soaking in those newborn days.
