When Should You Book a Newborn Photographer? A Philadelphia Mom’s Guide
If you’re expecting a baby, you probably have a running list of things to do before they arrive. Somewhere between getting the nursery ready, buying the tiny clothes and figuring out what you actually need for a newborn, you may be wondering: when should I book newborn photos?
As a Philadelphia newborn photographer, this is one of the questions I hear often. And the short answer is: it’s usually best to book your newborn photographer while you’re still pregnant.
When Should I Book My Newborn Photography Session?
I recommend reaching out during your second or early third trimester whenever possible.
You don’t need to know exactly when your baby will arrive. Your due date gives us a starting point, and we’ll plan your newborn session around baby's actual arrival.
Booking ahead simply makes sure there is room on my calendar for you—especially if you know newborn photos are something you don't want to miss.
And if your baby is already here and you haven't booked? Still reach out. If I have availability, I am always happy to try to fit in a last-minute newborn session.
What If My Baby Doesn't Arrive on Their Due Date?
They usually don't!
One of the biggest concerns I hear from expecting parents is how they're supposed to schedule newborn pictures when they have no idea when their baby will actually arrive.
You don't have to.
When you book your newborn session with me, your due date helps me plan my calendar. Once baby arrives, we finalize your session date.
Whether baby decides to come a little early or makes you wait a little longer, we'll adjust.
When Are Newborn Photos Usually Taken?
Newborn sessions are typically photographed during those first few weeks when babies are still extra sleepy, curled up and incredibly tiny.
That said, I don't believe you've “missed” newborn photos just because your baby is a little older.
Every baby is different, and my goal is always to create beautiful photographs of your baby exactly as they are during this season.
Where Do Philadelphia Newborn Sessions Take Place?
My newborn sessions take place in my private studio in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania, conveniently located for families throughout Philadelphia, Delaware County, the Main Line and surrounding areas.
Having a dedicated newborn studio means everything is ready when you arrive. I take care of the setup, posing, wraps and all of the little details so you can simply show up with your baby.
As a mom myself, I know getting out of the house with a newborn can feel like an accomplishment all on its own. I want the photography part to feel easy.
Do I Need to Bring Anything for My Newborn Session?
Not much—and that's intentional.
I have wraps and everything needed to create the simple, timeless newborn photographs you see throughout my work. Before your session, I'll also walk you through what to expect and anything I'd like you to bring.
You don't need to show up knowing how your baby will pose or worrying about whether they'll sleep the entire time. That's my job.
We'll follow baby's lead, take breaks when needed and give them the time they need.
Should I Book Newborn Photos Before Baby Arrives?
If newborn photographs are important to you, yes.
Those first few weeks can feel like a blur. Your baby changes so quickly—the tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, little expressions and the way they fit against your chest won't stay quite this small for long.
Booking your photographer before your baby arrives means it's one less thing you have to think about afterward.
I've photographed newborns and families for years, and my goal is to give parents more than beautiful photographs. I want you to have a calm experience and images that bring you right back to what this stage felt like.
