What Should My Baby Wear for Newborn Photos?
If you have a newborn session coming up, you may be wondering what your baby should wear or if you need to buy anything special for photos.
The good news is, you really don’t need to.
For newborn sessions in my Ridley Park studio, I provide the wraps, outfits and props we’ll use for your baby’s photos. You don’t need to show up with a bag full of outfits or order a bunch of things specifically for the session.
Simple is usually best for newborn photos
When it comes to newborn photography, I’ve always preferred to keep things simple.
Newborns are so tiny for such a short amount of time, and I want the focus of the photos to be on your baby. I love being able to see their little fingers, toes, cheeks and all of those tiny details that change so quickly.
For that reason, I use wraps, simple newborn outfits and neutral pieces that photograph beautifully without taking the attention away from the baby.
Do I need to buy newborn photo outfits?
No.
I have everything we need here at the studio.
Newborn photography outfits are also made specifically to fit brand-new babies for photos. A lot of regular newborn clothing can still look pretty big on a baby during those first few weeks, especially once they're lying down.
The pieces I keep in the studio are chosen specifically for newborn sessions and for the style of photography you see throughout my work.
Before your session, I’ll also send you a questionnaire where you can tell me about colors and styles you like. That helps me plan everything ahead of time.
What should my baby arrive wearing?
This is one place where I tell parents to make things easy on themselves.
Have your baby arrive in something comfortable and easy to take off. A simple sleeper that zips or buttons is perfect.
There’s no reason to dress them up before you come. We’ll get them changed and ready once you’re here.
Can I bring something special from home?
Absolutely.
If you have something sentimental that you'd really like included, let me know before your session. Maybe it's a blanket made by a grandparent, something that belonged to an older sibling or another item that's important to your family.
I can't promise that every item will work with every setup, but I'm always happy to see if there's a way we can incorporate something meaningful.
One less thing to worry about
Those first few weeks with a new baby are already a lot.
The last thing I want you worrying about is finding the perfect newborn outfit or wondering whether you brought enough with you.
My Ridley Park newborn studio is set up so that when you arrive, most of what we need is already here.
