Why Sunset Is Worth the Late Bedtime
If you’ve looked into booking a beach family session with me in Sea Isle City, you’ve probably noticed one thing — all of my beach sessions take place around sunset.
And if you have little kids, I know exactly what you’re thinking:
But that’s bedtime. 😂
As a mom of six, I get it. Keeping kids up later than usual on vacation can feel like you're asking for trouble. But when it comes to beach photos, I promise sunset is worth the late bedtime.
Why I Photograph Beach Sessions at Sunset
The hour before sunset gives us the soft, warm light you see in my beach galleries. Instead of harsh sunlight, squinting eyes and strong shadows, we get beautiful, flattering light and those soft beach colors that make summer photos feel like summer.
It's a huge part of the look of my work.
That's why I don't schedule beach sessions earlier in the afternoon, even when an earlier time might be more convenient.
But What If My Kids Are Tired?
This is probably the biggest concern I hear from parents.
Your kids do not need to be perfectly behaved for me.
We keep things moving, let them play, walk along the water, snuggle with you and have fun. Some of my favorite photographs happen when everyone stops worrying about getting the “perfect” family picture.
I've been photographing families for more than a decade, and I'm also raising six kids of my own. I know how quickly moods can change. 😂 We'll work with them.
A later nap, a good dinner and a few snacks before your session can help, too.
Think of It as One Special Vacation Night
If you're spending the week in Sea Isle City, let this be the night bedtime looks a little different.
Get dressed up, head to the beach together and let the kids stay up late.
Years from now, you're not going to remember that bedtime was an hour later that night.
But you will have photographs of sandy little feet, your kids running by the ocean and your whole family together during one of those summers that somehow goes way too fast.
That's why I'll always choose the sunset. 🤍
